Fabric Weaving Project Completed!

So here is the 12 by 17.5 completed woven fabric mat, or wall art if you will.  I finally found the density and weight of the finished piece that I was looking for in my earlier attempts at doing this on the rigid heddle loom. I plan to try this again on the loom with some adjustments to warping distance, width of fabric strips, and better compacting of the rows of weft.  We'll see if that will work.  I am hoping so since I do love working on the loom.  I am very pleased with this piece, especially the colors.  It just speak of happiness to me, or a big fiesta!   You can always click on the photos here and see an enlarged view, in this case you may be interested in seeing all the fabrics and yarn I used.  There are 99 rows of individual yarns or fabrics in this piece!!  

Fabric Weaving

On Saturday I attended a demonstration of fabric weaving at one of the island art galleries.  The artist wove fabric and yarns into rectangular pieces which she then used to create purses.  I was really glad I went since I've been wanting to weave fabrics but wasn't sure how to approach it.  This is the set-up I created to do so.  It's foam core board with pins on top and bottom at one inch intervals, this structure supports the warp.  Then the weaving is done with fabric strips and yarns by hand in the usual weaving fashion.  I learned to cut the fabrics 3 inches wide, sew them into tubes, and weave them across the width of the warp.  I am using batiks that fray very little, so I did not sew them but am folding them in half, then again fold them as I am placing them into position.  Rows of fabric are alternated with rows of decorative yarns or other fiber.  I'm also using some transparent ribbon occasionally.  For this piece I am using lots of blues and greens and occasional golds and oranges, I guess I am using my seaside environment as inspiration.  Here's a photo of what I've accomplished till now.  This is a slower process then weaving on the rigid heddle loom but I am enjoying the design possibilities.  The piece I am weaving will be about 12 by 18 inches when completed.  Would make a nice placemat or wall hanging.
