SAQA Exhibit: A Sense of Time at International Quilt Festival 2008

This is my art quilt entitled "Moments" that is hanging in the "Sense of Time" Exhibit of Studio Art Quilt Associates (SAQA) at the International Quilt Festival in Houston this week.  It measures about 36 by 38 inches.  In this piece I wanted to show the changing seasons by which we measure time in our physical world, punctuated by the individual moments which reflect our life experiences.   

International Quilt Festival in Houston: Journal Quilts "Elements" Exhibit

The 2008 IQF has opened in Houston!  I am fortunate to have quilts juried into two exhibits.  This is a photo of my piece entitled "Forest Floor" which is hanging in the Journal Quilts Elements Exhibit at the Festival.  All of these pieces had to be 17 by 22 inches, and needed to reference the "elements" theme, earth, water, wind, or fire, in some way.    My inspiration for this art quilt came from a photo I took at Rainbow Springs park in Crystal River Florida while visiting with some friends.  Attached in the actual photo which inspired this piece.   

Art Quilt: Dance of the Broken Spirit

Here is my art quilt that's been accepted into the Black and White Revisited Exhibit sponsored by Fiberarts Connection of Southern California.  I was portraying a person trying to keep their balance even though their spirit was broken, all the while appearing to be dancing in the view of others.  There are words included on the quilt which you may be able to read if you enlarge the photo.  The words address this issue.  Here is a closeup photo of one section of the quilt, showing some of the interest in the quilt background.  The dates for this exhibit have not been determined yet.

Art Quilt: Out Of The Box

  Out of the Box is my latest wall quilt. It hasn't been quilted yet, but here's how it looks now that I have completed its' design.  My plan was to show a range of color values to indicate the sky, water, and earth. I then added the figure by stencilling on top of the quilt surface.  I added the vertical and horizontal lines, some stencilled and some of fabric pieces, to indicate the trappings of life which can keep a person hemmed in, or trapped so as not to experience the fullness of life. I think we've all been there.  So preoccupied with some issues, that we fail to notice what is going on around us.  Or notice just the pleasure of being alive.  I hoped to show some  breaking away of these barriers and the emergence of the figure through the trappings.  What do you think?  Did I succeed?   The quilting will add to the design as well.
